Tipsy, Mount Nebo, Madaba, and Yummy Food
En-route to Wadi Musa, we visited the famous site of Mount Nebo. This is where God showed Moses the Promised Land according to the Bible. We got a clear day too, and also saw Jerusalem in the distance (I waved my paw), as well as a nice view of the Jordan Valley.
There’s a church on the site with old mosaics, and on the hill, you can see the modern sculptures of the Serpentine Cross, and the Book of Love sculpture.
Being the home of mosaics, we stopped at an Arts Centre where we got to see the artisans in action, still paw-making their beautiful pieces of art using traditional skills.
Then, we went on to Madaba and the beautiful Orthodox Church of St George. This lovely church houses the oldest mosaic map of Palestine dating back to the 6th Century, as well as beautiful icons including the Virgin with the Blue Hand – a helping 3rd hand which you can see at the bottom of the painting. It’s a small church, but there’s so much to see, we went round twice.
Our guide recommended we tried some traditional fare, and we had a falafel wrap, and when the queue is out the door, you know it’s going to be good, and a delummy chicken sharawma wrap – only 3 JND including a drink – now we’re looking to find a place in London which sells one just as good, or a recipe that we can make ourselves!
